Vol. 175 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Talk on Handknitting Industry.

23.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that during the course of a topical talk from Radio Éireann at 1.40 p.m. on 5th May, 1959, on the subject of the handknitting industry there was an advertisement for one particular Donegal firm, and that grave resentment is felt as a result by other Donegal handknitting industrials; and, if so, if he will ensure that such talks are not so used to the benefit of one manufacturer over that of his competitors.

I understand that the Topical Talk to which the Deputy refers was specifically concerned with hand-knitting in Ardara, as an example of what is going on in other parts of the county also. Whilst it would certainly be undesirable in a broadcast of this kind to advertise an individual firm, it does not seem likely that the mention of one family in this talk could be taken to constitute an advertisement or to be injurious to the interests of other people engaged in the handknitting industry.
