Vol. 175 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilworth (Cork) Land Allotment.

14.

asked the Minister for Lands why Mr. Thomas Griffen who was allotted a part of the Moorpark Estate at Kilworth, County Cork, by the Land Commission was not allotted a parcel adjoining his own holding.

This allottee was given a substantial allotment within a half mile of his holding, the ordinary distance limit being one mile. The general lay-out of the scheme did not permit an adjacent allotment.

This allottee was actually on the boundary of this estate. All that had to be done was to make a gap in the wall between his holding and Moorpark. Could the Minister now tell us why it is he is forced to drive his livestock along the Dublin-Cork main road in order to get the land he was allotted? It is the policy of the Land Commission——

The Deputy is not asking a question. He is making a protracted statement.

I am asking the Minister why this man had to go half a mile away——

We have heard all that. The Deputy is making an addendum.

This is entirely a matter for the Land Commission. The inspector in charge in his own right decided it was best to allot this allottee land within half a mile for the sake of the general convenience and in relation to the general division of the estate.

Surely the Minister is not suggesting it is the inspector in charge who takes the decision?

I am suggesting I have no power to alter the decision.

The Minister suggested that the inspector in charge decided. That is not the fact.

And his decision was confirmed by the lay Commissioners.

The Commissioners decide. All the inspector in charge can do is recommend.

Perhaps it was the man who decided in the case of the Ballymore-Eustace lands?
