Vol. 176 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Total National Income.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the years 1957 and 1958 (1) the total national income, (2) the amount thereof accruing to the following factors, viz., wages, salaries, rents, profits and interest, and (3) the total of incomes from abroad.

It is estimated that the total national income was £477 million in 1957 and £493 million in 1958.

In 1957 domestic wages, salaries and pensions, including employers' contributions to social security, amounted to £240 million, profits (including income of farmers and members of their families) from agriculture, forestry and fishing, amounted to £126 million, and non-agricultural domestic profits, professional earnings, interest and dividends amounted to £76 million. The estimated income from land and buildings (including the rent element in the land annuities) was £10 million and the net inflow of income from abroad was £31 million. The provision for stock appreciation involved a deduction of £6 million.

It is estimated that in 1958 the profits from agriculture, forestry and fishing and the net inflow of income from abroad were £117 million and £32 million respectively. The other information for 1958 is not yet available but it will be included in the 1958 issue of the Irish Statistical Survey. It is likely that when the figures are being published in the Survey it will be necessary to make some revisions in them for both years.
