asked the Minister for Justice when the last execution for the crime of murder was carried out in the State; whether a retainer is paid annually to the English hangman and, if so, if he will state how much is paid per execution; whether his Department have received applications for appointment to the post of hangman from Irishmen within the past five years; and whether he will refrain from appointing any Irish national to such a position.

The answer to the first part of the question is that the last execution was carried out on the 10th April, 1954. To the next part of the question the answer is "no" and to the last two parts "yes" and "no" respectively.
