Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Partition Issue at U.N.O.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if it is the intention of the Government to raise the question of the partitioning of Ireland at the United Nations Organisation in the near future.

Partition has been adverted to on a number of occasions in addresses by our representatives in the General Assembly of the United Nations. As to the question of raising the matter as a specific issue, the Government will be guided by their judgment as to what is best calculated to serve the interests of the restoration of national unity.

To raise the issue of Partition at the United Nations at an inopportune time or on an inappropriate occasion would be likely to do more harm than good. I cannot say whether an opportune time or an appropriate occasion is likely to arise in the near future.

Do we take it, therefore, that the Taoiseach's reply is that our delegates in the United Nations are not going to take the initiative on the the Partition Question—that they will merely wait for an opportune time?

I do not know what the Deputy means by "taking the initiative". Perhaps I could answer his question by asking another. Would the Deputy be prepared to accept the decision of the United Nations on that issue?

That is a hypothetical question.
