5.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of children who sat for the tests prescribed by his Department for entrance to State-assisted secondary schools in 1958.

According to the records of the Department of Education the number of pupils who were required to sit for the entrance examinations conducted in 1958 by the managers of recognised secondary schools in accordance with the provisions of the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools 1958-9 was 8,246. A further 11,381 were exempt from the requirement of the entrance examination because of having passed the Primary School Certificate Examination, or the Department's examination for county council scholarships in secondary or vocational schools or the examination for admission to the preparatory colleges.
