Vol. 176 No. 9

Written Answer. - Discussions with British Government: Official Communiqué.

26.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give the text of the official communiqué which was issued following the discussions which he had with the British Government in London.

The following is the text of the communiqué:—

"Talks took place in London today between the Taoiseach, Mr. Lemass, and the President of the Board of Trade, Sir David Eccles. Mr. Lemass was accompanied by Mr. Patrick Smith, Minister for Agriculture, and Mr. J. Lynch, the Minister for Industry and Commerce. Mr. Vaughan-Morgan, Minister of State, Board of Trade, and Mr. Alport, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Commonwealth Relations Office, took part on the British side.

The Irish Ministers were concerned with certain trends and prospects in trade. The British Ministers recognised the importance of these problems in view of the desire of both Governments to maintain and strengthen the special trade relationship between the two countries. The Irish Ministers suggested possibilities for improving trade between Ireland and Britain. It was agreed to put in hand a study of these suggestions, which will be submitted in fuller detail and in the first instance to senior officials of the two Governments who will in future meet regularly to examine other economic questions of common interest."
