Vol. 176 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is in a position to state the estimate of the number of persons at work in 1959.

An estimate of the number of persons at work in 1959 will not be available until early next year.

Could the Minister say what date in the year is taken? We did discuss this before, I think.

It varies quite a lot. In the case of agricultural employment it is taken in June. In the case of manufacturing industries it is taken on an average of the four quarters. In the case of building and many other industries it is taken on the number of insurance stamps sold. That would also be on the basis of the four quarters.

Am I correct in saying that when I had a question down previously the Minister said the information would be available as soon as the agricultural figures were available after April and he mentioned the month of June?

I may have been wrong or the Deputy may have misunderstood me. That is not right, anyway.

That is a fine, comprehensive reply.
