Vol. 176 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Finglas Post Office Accommodation.

27.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that mothers have often to queue in the most inclement weather for two hours at Finglas village post office to obtain children's allowances; and if he will take steps to remedy this position.

I am aware that there is a certain amount of delay at Finglas Village Post Office in connection with the payment of children's allowances. Some 1,100 allowances are paid on the first Tuesday of each month at this office. The staff is augmented but some delay is unavoidable because of the large numbers seeking payment at the same time.

Is the Minister aware that this is due to the fact that the staff are engaged in their own business whilst they are also engaged on State business and that this is the cause of quite a lot of the delay?

I am advised that the conditions should improve somewhat in the future as the sub-postmistress proposes to employ a whole-time fully qualified assistant who would be available in addition to the staff of three heretofore provided for the payment of these allowances.

That is all the people want to know.
