Vol. 176 No. 12

Courts of Justice Bill, 1959—First Stage.

I move that leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to increase the remuneration of judges of the Supreme Court, High Court and Circuit Court and of justices of the District Court.

I should like to know if there has been any public demand for an increase of salaries for Supreme Court and High Court Judges in view of the fact that many demands have been made on behalf of more deserving persons and have been refused by the Government. I should like to go on record as opposing the introduction of the Bill.

Can the Minister say if anything can be done to get an increase for Deputies? They have a much better case.

They have my sympathy.

There are many more deserving classes in the State than Supreme Court and High Court Judges. There are old age pensioners and widows and orphans.

Question put and agreed to.
Second Stage ordered for 21st October 1959.
