Vol. 176 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Earnings of Aerlínte Teoranta.

10.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the actual earnings of Aerlínte Teoranta since the commencement of the transatlantic air service to date in respect of (a) passengers and (b) freight, and their expenditure during the same period.

The information sought by the Deputy, in so far as it relates to the period included in the financial year ended on 31st March, 1959, will appear in the accounts of Aerlinte. As the Taoiseach indicated during the debate on the Air Navigation and Transport (No. 2) Bill, 1959, these accounts will be published at the annual meeting of the Company, which will be held at the end of this month.

The Company's earnings and expenditure for the period from 31st March, 1959, to date, will, of course, be incorporated in their accounts for the year ending 31st March, 1960, which will be published in due course.

I do not think it would be proper to ask the Company to publish interim returns.

While one might accept the Minister's reply in ordinary circumstances, surely this is information which the House is entitled to have to enable it discuss the Air Navigation and Transport Bill? It is not merely an ordinary roving inquiry. It is information that is desirable and necessary for the purpose of discussing a Bill before us. I suggest the Minister should view it in that light and give the House the information.
