Vol. 177 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cobh Customs Examination.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the necessity for customs examination, prior to embarkation, of the luggage of outward-bound passengers availing of the transatlantic liner service from Cobh; if he is aware that such examination causes much delay and inconvenience to passengers; and if he will consider taking steps to discontinue the examination or to carry it out under a system which will reduce to a minimum such inconvenience and delay.

In view of the restrictions on the export of capital to places outside the Sterling Area, Customs examination of the luggage of outward bound passengers at Cobh is necessary.

Customs procedure at Cobh is under continuing examination to ensure that any delay or inconvenience is kept to a minimum.

What investigations were carried out into the gentleman who was allowed to export £1,300,000 of sterling recently?

That is quite a separate question.
