asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total number of places for pupils who have obtained honours in the Leaving Certificate and who are otherwise eligible to commence the teacher training course under Departmental schemes, and the total number of pupils in this category who sought admission to this course in each year from 1951 to the most recent year for which figures are available.

The minimum standard required of candidates for entrance to training at the Leaving Certificate examination is:—

(i) to pass the examination generally in accordance with the Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools;

(ii) to pass with honours in Irish, and

(iii) to pass in each of the four subjects English, Mathematics, History and Geography.

The following are the relevant statistics requested by the Deputy in regard to the open competition for boys and girls:—
