Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Estuary Lands.

43.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has seen reports of purchases of land on the north and south shores of the Shannon estuary; and if he has any information as to the identity of the purchasers and the purpose of these transactions.

I have seen brief Press reports of the transactions referred to by the Deputy, but I have no information as to the identity or objectives of the purchasers.

In view of the fact that these purchased lands are contiguous to some of the finest deep water berths in Europe, is it possible that non-nationals would acquire this land without its coming to the notice of the Minister's Department or the Government?

The Deputy will appreciate that the functions of my Department are to deal with land necessary for the relief of congestion. I do not think what the Deputy has in mind comes within the ambit of my Department.

Would it come to the notice of the Taoiseach to whom I addressed this question in the first instance?
