Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Scholarships.

58.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the details of all the scholarships which are available to students sitting for the Leaving and Intermediate Certificates examination.

The scholarships available to candidates on the results of the Intermediate and Leaving Certificate Examinations in accordance with the Rules for Secondary Schools are as follows:

(i) Intermediate Certificate Examination:

(a) Intermediate Scholarships tenable for two years in recognised secondary schools:

(i) boys—36 first-class scholarships of value £40 per annum and 36 second-class scholarships of value £20 per annum;

(ii) girls—20 first-class scholarships of value £30 per annum and 20 second-class scholarships of value £15 per annum.

(b) Earl of Cork Scholarships of approximate value £20 each are awarded annually—one for boys and one for girls.

(ii) Leaving Certificate Examination:

(a) University Scholarships for applicants from the Gaeltacht;

(b) University Scholarships for applicants who folow their University course througlh Irish.

The annual value of these scholarships is £175 if the student resides away from home or £125 if the student resides at home while attending the University.

I should add that bodies other than the Department of Education may award scholarships on the results of these examinations, in particular nearly all the County Councils and County Borough Councils award their University Scholarships on the results of the Leaving Certificate examination. University College, Galway, also awards its ordinary Entrance Scholarships on the results of this examination.

Is there any reason why first class scholarships in the Intermediate Examination were £40 for boys and only £30 for girls? What is the reason for the difference in the amount?

That is a separate question.
