Vol. 177 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Felling of Trees on Cork Estate.

44.

asked the Minister for Lands (a) if a permit for the felling of trees on the Bowenscourt Estate, Kildorrery, County Cork, has been issued by the Forestry Division of his Department; and, if so, (i) for how many trees and (ii) whether any reservation has been made in this permit to preserve the scenic amenities of this estate by the planned felling of these trees; and (b) if he will state how many trees have been felled under permit by the applicant, the date of issue of each permit, the number of trees specified in each permit, and the lands or estates in County Cork where the felling took place.

A permit to fell 1,121 trees on the Bowenscourt Estate was issued on 20th March, 1959.

Consideration is given to the question of scenic amenity in all cases of application to fell but no trees were reserved from this felling permit for preservation of amenity. The Deputy will appreciate that the Minister may refuse an application for a felling Licence for trees for the purpose of preserving amenity only with the consent of the local planning authority and the authority concerned has made no application to my Department in respect of preservation of amenity at Bowenscourt.

The information sought in part (b) of the question in relation to permits issued to the same applicant (apart from the permit referred to earlier) takes the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the report. I am unable to state the exact number of trees felled under permit by the applicant but it is probable that the full number licensed were felled.
