Vol. 177 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly School Toilet Facilities.

10.

asked the Minister for Education when the work of providing necessary and proper toilet facilities for St. Ciaran's national school, Ballycumber, will commence.

It is proposed to carry out an extensive scheme of improvements, including the provision of water-flushed toilets, in the case of St. Ciaran's National School, Ballycumber. The production of satisfactory evidence of title to the additional ground required in connection with the scheme is awaited in my Department. When this evidence has been submitted my Department will be in a position to sanction a grant towards the cost of the scheme. I am unable to say at present when the actual building work will commence.

I appreciate the Minister's reply but, arising out of it, is it not correct that this proposal has been under consideration now for quite a number of years? Is the Minister aware that there is, locally, considerable concern at the present state of affairs in the school? The school is right beside the church and the local cemetery and there is something approaching a public nuisance there at the moment.

My Department has been concerned but the Deputy will appreciate that title must be established before a grant can be given.

It will engage the Minister's attention?
