Vol. 177 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dispensary Doctors.

8.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the number of part-time and full-time dispensary doctors in the State.

There are 665 district medical officers. All of these officers are part-time, but obliged under the terms of their appointments to be available as required for eligible patients in their districts. This, however, does not preclude them from engaging in private practice.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the present salary scales for part-time and full-time dispensary doctors.

The standard salary scale for permanent District Medical Officers is £674 a year, increasing by annual increments of £40 9s. 5d., to £876 a year, including temporary bonus. The approved remuneration for temporary District Medical Officers is £12 19s. 7d. per week, including temporary bonus.

Dispensary doctors, in practice, by virtue of their office, act as Registrars of Births and Deaths for which they receive a small salary and are entitled to receive fees for the issue of copies of entries in the Registers, and they are entitled to certain fees for services under the Mental Treatment Act. In addition, they are entitled, like other medical practitioners, to fees from the health authority for maternity services provided by them for eligible patients if they have entered into agreements with the health authority for this service and for the notification of infectious diseases; and to fees from the Department of Social Welfare for certification of patients under the Social Welfare Acts.
