Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Talks with British Government

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether the talks at present in progress between this country and the United Kingdom for an advancement of trade are particularly related to any concessions which the United Kingdom Government may make, or may be intending to make, in her negotiations for the outer Free Trade area, having regard to the fact that such concessions may be of vital importance to the future of Irish agricultural markets which at present are causing considerable anxiety to the agricultural community.

The discussions between the Irish and British Governments relate to every factor affecting trade between the two countries, including the commitments which the British Government may undertake in the course of the negotiations for the establishment of the European Free Trade Association.

I take it we are still unrepresented even by an observer at these discussions?

We are not represented at the discussions.

Would the Taoiseach consider this country having representation there in view of grave importance of the issues concerned?

My understanding is that these discussions will have come to an end within the next few days.

Can the Taoiseach say if the negotiations which were taking place in Paris are at present suspended?

Completely so.

Is there any likelihood of their being resumed?

My guess is, no, but it is no more than a guess.
