Vol. 177 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Students from Six Counties.

27.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the number of students from the Six-County area who are attending State assisted secondary schools in this State, and (b) the capitation grant payable in respect of such students.

According to particulars furnished by the managers of secondary schools the number of children from the Six-County area who are attending recognised secondary schools in the current school-year is 485. It is estimated that the total capitation grant payable in respect of these pupils amounts to approximately £5,500.

Are these capitation grants payable in respect of all pupils in the secondary schools? Are there any exclusions?

There are certain conditions applying which must be fulfilled in all schools. Otherwise, they are payable.

Does that cover agricultural colleges?

These are grants for secondary schools. I think that would be separate.

There are, as the Minister knows, secondary schools that do special courses in agriculture. Are they covered?

Any secondary school, yes, subject to the overriding conditions.
