Vol. 178 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Relief Schemes.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance what arrangements he proposes to make by way of provision of Christmas relief schemes for the unemployed in the Mountmellick area; and if such schemes will be put on hands immediately so that the many unemployed may be put to work and payment of wages made before Christmas.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance what grants will be made available for Christmas relief work for the unemployed in the following areas:—Birr, Tullamore, Edenderry, Banagher, Portlaoise, Portarlington, Mountrath, Rathdowney, Mountmellick, Athy and Carlow; and if he will make arrangements for schemes to commence at once.

I propose subject to the permission of the Leas-Cheann to answer Nos. 24 and 25 together.

Grants related to the degree of unemployment in each case have been allocated for the carrying out of winter employment schemes in 10 of the 11 areas referred to. The number of registered unemployed in Rathdowney was not sufficient to warrant a grant. Particulars of the grants allocated in the other 10 areas are in the form of the tabular statement which, again with your permission, a Leas-Cheann, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Schemes are in course of preparation to absorb the approved grants.

Following is the statement:
