Vol. 178 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Surplus Potatoes in Monaghan

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether the alcohol factory in Cooley will take potatoes from County Monaghan in view of the surplus of potatoes in that area, which the farmers find difficulty in disposing of.

I understand from Ceimicí Teo. that the Cooley factory will take potatoes from County Monaghan on the same basis as from other clean land areas.

Could the Minister say approximately what tonnage it is thought Cooley will be in a position to take from the County Monaghan area?

As far as I have been informed, the factory can handle something in the neighbourhood of 250 tons per week. The apportionment is 75 per cent. of that to the Black Scab area for which the factory was established originally and 25 per cent. to the clean areas. It was originally 95 per cent. and 5 per cent. I am informed that they intend to review this whole position at the end of the month.
