Vol. 178 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University in Limerick.

27.

asked the Minister for Education if he has taken or proposes to take any steps with regard to investigating the possibility of having a university erected in Limerick City; and if he will initiate discussions in respect of this matter between the Limerick representatives of the project, his Department and the National University of Ireland.

It is only in the past week that this matter has been submitted to me by the interested parties. It would be entirely premature to make any statement in relation to it at present.

Is the Minister aware that this whole question of providing university facilities at Limerick, not only for Limerick but for the surrounding areas as well, has in fact been investigated by a committee representative of the principals of secondary schools in and near Limerick and under the Chairmanship of three successive Mayors of Limerick during the past three years? The Committee have issued a report which is due to be considered next Monday night by the City Council.

The Deputy seems to be giving information instead of seeking information.

And that report contains certain recommendations, the nature of which will come to light in due course as a recommendation from the Limerick City Council, representing the citizens of Limerick. Having regard to that, does the Minister not think this question put down here now is a rather belated effort on the part of Deputy O'Malley to cash in on the hard work done by other people in the city of Limerick over the past three years when he made absolutely no contribution towards the work that was done?

(Interruptions.)

Order. That seems to be a separate question.
