Vol. 178 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Stations in Cork City Areas.

4.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the pressing need for Garda Síochána stations in the newly built-up areas in Cork city and suburbs; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

The erection of new Garda stations in the areas referred to is not regarded as a matter of immediate necessity. These areas are served from adjoining stations and present arrangements, coupled with the provision within the next few months of a system of radio patrol cars, should enable police supervision to be maintained at a satisfactory level.

Has the Minister given any consideration to the feasibility of his Department's securing the tenancy of Corporation houses in selected areas to be used as Garda stations, pending the arrival of a situation in which new Garda stations can be built?

That was considered, arising out of a similar question some time ago. I gave an answer to that. It was not regarded as feasible at the time, anyhow.
