Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Act, 1953: Institutional Services.

16.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of (a) Dublin City and County, (b) Cork City and (c) the rest of the country the total sum charged at the rate of 10/- per day to persons availing of institutional services under section 15 of the Health Act, 1953, as amended, and the total sum collected from such persons.

The charge, if any, to be made in each case in which institutional services are provided under Section 15 of the Health Act, 1953, is determined by the health authority concerned and is subject to a maximum of 10/- per day. The statistics available do not show the amounts collected from persons chargeable at the maximum rate.

The total amounts collected in the year ended 31st March, 1959, were:— Dublin City and County, £91,000; Cork City and County, £33,000; Rest of the country, £121,000.

It would not be possible, without very extensive inquiries, to ascertain the amount collected from Cork City patients, as distinct from patients from the County area.

Would it be possible to obtain from the Minister by Parliamentary Question at a later date the numbers of cases in which patients were charged 10/-, or less, in respect of any particular county?

That might involve very extensive inquiries but, if the Deputy puts down a question, I shall endeavour to get the information for him.
