Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Accident in United States.

28.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government will be responsible for any payments made to the next of kin of the negro lady killed in the fatal motor accident in which the son of the Irish Ambassador to the United States was recently involved.

The State has no responsibility for any payment in cases of the kind to which the Deputy refers.

Arising out of the Minister's reply——

I have called Question No. 29.

I was on my feet. I cannot shout. Does the Leas-Cheann Comhairle wish me to shout? I presume I am as much entitled to ask a supplementary question as any other Deputy.

The Deputy is entitled to, if he gives notice When another question is called he is not so entitled.

It is rather significant that this is the first time that an acting Ceann Comhairle has sought to silence a Deputy.

There must be no reflection on the Chair.

There is nobody silencing the Deputy.

The Minister, I presume, is not Ceann Comhairle yet. Would the Minister inform me, arising out of Question No. 28, whether the Government are satisfied that arrangements have already been put into effect to ensure that full compensation is given to the next-of-kin of this lady who so unfortunately lost her life?

That seems to be a separate question.

In view of the fact that diplomatic immunity was applied in this case, namely, that the blanket of this Government and this House was used in this case, will the Minister now say whether he is satisfied that full compensation, if such could possibly be given in a monetary way for the loss incurred, has been given to the relatives of this lady?

That is a separate question.

Can I get an answer from the Minister, because it does arise?
