Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigs and Bacon Commission.

37.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he proposes to alter the constitution of the Pigs and Bacon Commission; and, if so, when it is intended to do so.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, a proposal that the constitution of the Pigs and Bacon Commission be altered is made by the Advisory Committee on the Marketing of Agricultural Produce in their Report on the Export of Bacon and other Pig Meat.

The White Paper which, as already announced, will be published shortly on the Reports of the Advisory Committee will indicate the general conclusions of the Government on this and other recommendations of the Committee.

Would the Minister be in a position to say whether the word "shortly" in this context can be given the interpretation of being within the calendar year?

I would expect it would be but I dislike supplementaries of this sort because I fear being tied up to dates and times I may not be able to implement.

The Minister will appreciate that our mortal tenure does not extend into eternity.

The Minister appreciates that there are some violent differences of opinion amongst those engaged in this business. Surely it is my duty to have the utmost consultation with these people and to give them every chance to express their views on matters which concern their business.

I am accepting the Minister's pious hope.
