Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Maize Grits.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that maize grits used in the preparation of breakfast cereal foods are at present being imported; and if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that such grits are manufactured in this country.

I am aware of the importation of maize grits for the manufacture of breakfast cereals. The possibility of having these grits manufactured in the country has been considered. I am advised that, at the present level of demand for the end product in which the imported grits are used as a material, their manufacture here would not be economic.

Is the Minister at liberty to give the source of his advice? I am advised that they can be manufactured economically here.

The Minister obtained evidence of an authentic character. If the Deputy has any technical advice to the contrary, either of his own knowledge or from any person he knows, I think the Minister would be glad to receive it.

Has the Minister got that advice?

The Minister's advice was that, at the present level of demand for the end product in which the imported grits are used, their manufacture here would not be economic. In other words, the price is too high.

Is the Minister aware that that is the advice given by the English exporters of this raw material and not the view of the Irish millers?

Why do they not start it in Limerick?
