Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rooskey (Mayo) School.

101.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate when building of a new school at Rooskey, Carracastle, County Mayo, is likely to commence; and if it is proposed to carry out repairs to the existing school until the new building is ready for use.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of a new national school at Rooskey, Co. Mayo. The arrangements for the erection of the new school are being made by the Commissioners of Public Works and, while I am not in a position to say when the building of the new school will commence, every effort is being made to expedite the case.

I understand that minor repairs have been carried out by the Manager at the existing school and that he is arranging for the execution of some additional works.

In view of the fact that the normal period between the despatch of the matter to the Board of Works and the actual commencement of building is from 12 to 18 months, would the Minister take whatever special steps he can with the Board of Works to try and expedite the matter through their channel so that his Department can get going as quickly as possible?

In view of the urgency of the school, special steps have already been taken with the Commissioners of the Board of Works.
