Vol. 179 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Content of Sausages.

14.

asked the Minister for Health whether he proposes to establish a standard minimal meat content for sausages made and consumed in Ireland.

Such powers as are vested in the Minister for Health in regard to the fixing of standards for foodstuffs are contained in Section 56 of the Health Act, 1947. That Section, however, is specifically limited in its application to foods which are "of special importance to the public health" and, as I consider that it would be an abuse of my powers to attempt to use the Section to establish a standard minimal meat content for sausages, the reply to the question is in the negative.

It is a fact that the Minister fixes a standard for icecream and that is not as important from the public health point of view?

It might be.
