Vol. 179 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raheny (Dublin) Postal Facilities.

21.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the new district office will be provided in Raheny.

Arrangements are in progress for leasing the site selected for the proposed new District Office in the Coolock/Raheny area. The scheme includes erection of an automatic telephone exchange and I am unable to say at present when building will commence.

22.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is widespread dissatisfaction with the postal service in the Raheny district; and if he will arrange for a city delivery in the area.

While the pattern of postal delivary services in the built-up area of the Raheny District is the same as in other suburban areas of Dublin, the need for improving the present starting and finsihing times of the deliveries has come under notice. A reorganisation of the postmen's duties is in hand and will be completed as soon as possible.

Would the Minister indicate, as a result of the reorganisation, at what time will the first delivery be made in this area?

I am not able to answer that question at the moment because reorganisation is not completed, but I could give the times that deliveries are made at present, if the Deputy wishes to have that information. The morning deliveries in the Raheny area, that is, the built-up area, are at 7.30 a.m. and 10.55 a.m. and the evening deliveries are at 4.15 p.m. and 5.50 p.m., but we hope to improve the position in the reorganisation that will take place. Raheny has a rural area attached to it. The rural area is served by two postmen who start at 7.5 a.m. They have only one delivery and they finish about 10 a.m.

I live in the middle of the built-up Raheny area and I have never got my morning post before 9 o'clock.

I admit that Raheny postal services have been giving trouble for a few years past. The area is being steadily built up. We are making every effort to improve the position.

Where are the congratulations there?

They are coming.

9 o'clock is early enough.
