Vol. 179 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revision of Trade Agreements.

2.

asked the Taoiseach, in view of the heavy adverse trade balance between this country and the countries of Continental Europe, what steps it is proposed to take to revise the trade agreements between Ireland and these countries; and if any other action is contemplated to remedy the position.

It has been the policy of the Government to negotiate trade agreements with countries of Continental Europe when opportunity offers and where it is considered that such agreements would serve the essential interests of this country by assisting the expansion of our exports. Such agreements are kept under constant review with a view to possible improvements.

Our external trade policy in relation to the countries of Continental Europe is at present under examination. At this stage I am not in a position to say anything further on the subject.
