Vol. 179 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Content of Sausages.

3.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the nature and extent of any investigations by his Department, which established that sausages are bought not so much for their nutritive content as for their taste and flavour and other qualities which appeal to the palate, as stated in a reply of 25th February last.

Knowledge of the social habits of our people and the exercise of common sense will, I trust, indicate to the Deputy that formal investigation is not required in order to establish the fact to which the question refers.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware that, particularly among the poorer people who cannot afford the expensive cuts of meat, the sole intake of meat comes from sausages and on that account, would the Minister be prepared to reconsider his earlier statement?

I am perfectly certain that my association with the working-class people of Ireland is much closer than that of the Deputy and I am adhering to the answer I have already given.

That was a long time ago.
