Vol. 180 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant C.I.E. Employees.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state (1) the total number of persons declared redundant by Córas Iompair Éireann since the initiation of the most recent dieselisation and rationalisation policy, (2) the number of such persons in each of the following wage groups, viz., (a) £500 or under, (b) £1,000 or under and (c) over £1,000 and (3) the total number of men who, it is estimated, will be declared redundant by 31st December, 1960 and 1961.

I assume that the Deputy has in mind persons whose services have been terminated by C.I.E. since the enactment of the 1958 transport legislation.

The number of persons whose services have been terminated by C.I.E. due to redudancy directly attributable to circumstances covered by the compensatory provisions of the 1958 transport legislation, is 729. The number of such persons according to wage group is—Wage of £500 per annum or under, 475; Wage of over £500 per annum but not exceeding £1,000 per annum, 237; Wage of over £1,000, 17.

I am advised that C.I.E. cannot, at this stage, forecast with any degree of certainty, the numbers of employees to be declared redundant by 31st December, 1960 or 31st December, 1961. The numbers to be declared redundant by those dates will depend on the outcome of various studies being made by C.I.E. and on the implementation of reorganisation measures which may arise from them.
