asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what percentage of sponsored programme time is used for broadcasting in Irish.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sponsored Radio Programmes: Irish Broadcasts.
Instead of giving a single percentage figure which would not convey much information to the Deputy, I propose to explain shortly the position about the use of Irish in sponsored programmes.
Of 59 sponsored programmes broadcast each week, two, emanating from a single organisation, are almost exclusively in Irish, both as regards the announcement of programme items and the advertising matter. English is used by the other 57. However, in 10 of these the sponsors avail of a concession which allows up to 150 words of advertising speech material instead of the normal 100 words, if at least the extra 50 words are in Irish.
Would the Minister have figures available that would give the percentage of the total time, excluding sponsored programmes, allowed for programmes in Irish?
That is a separate question.
The question deals with sponsored programmes.
