Vol. 180 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Licences for Importation of Shoes.

20.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of licences issued for the importation of shoes in the past two years (1) the number of such licences issued to (a) wholesalers and (b) retailers, and (2) the number of pairs of shoes covered by such licences, respectively.

I regret that it is not possible to furnish the information requested by the Deputy for the reason that some of the licence holders under the relevant Quota Order are retailers as well as wholesalers of footwear.

Could the Minister say whether information could be obtained in regard to part 2 of the Question— the number of pairs of shoes covered by such licences—or perhaps the Minister would prefer that to be put down in another form?

I could answer it now, I think. In 1959 there were licences issued for 10,060 pairs and in 1960 for 2,452 pairs in excess of the quota.
