Vol. 180 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Oyler Estate, Wicklow.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the Oyler Estate, Ballygannon, Glenealy, Wicklow, for division amongst the small holders and landless men in the district.

The suitability of this estate was considered by the Land Commission a few years ago but, following a full report, they decided not to move for the acquisition of the lands.

Would the Minister try to expedite matters in connection with the O'Connor estate and this estate? There are over 800 acres involved and there is not a four-footed beast to be seen on either of them at the present time. In the second case, the man left the country some years ago and went to England. The land is lying derelict and small farmers are anxious to acquire some land to provide employment for their sons. I hope that the Minister, with these facts at his disposal, will expedite matters and provide land for some of the landless people in the county.

I do not know if the Deputy appreciated my reply, which was to the effect that, after consideration, the Land Commission decided to take no action. The information at my disposal is that the land is unsuitable for acquisition but I shall have the Deputy's remarks examined by my Department.
