Vol. 180 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killing of Africans.

10.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether in reference to the killing of seventy defenceless Africans by forces of the South African Government the Government in the interests of common humanity will express to the South African Government their detestation of this outrage.

11.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he has received a copy of a resolution from the Dublin Trades Council condemning the recent action of the South African Government by which seventy defenceless Africans were killed by armed Government police during a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid laws in South Africa; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take questions Nos. 10 and 11 together.

I have received a copy of the resolution from the Dublin Trades Council to which the Deputy refers.

As regards the substance of the questions, the Deputy will have seen the statement I made on 24th March concerning the tragic happenings in South Africa at the beginning of last week. This statement has been brought to the attention of the South African Government.

May I ask the Minister whether it is likely that he could persuade the Government to institute a fund for the dependents of the men who were killed, or would he ask the Red Cross to initiate a public subscription in order to assist them?

That is a very different question.

Surely it arises from the answer.

It does not.

It would be a practical sign of the Minister's sympathy, but he is not very good at that kind of thing.
