asked the Taoiseach if in relation to the National Farm Survey, 1957-58 (east and midland region) in respect of (a) 50-100 acre farms (b) 100-200 acre farms and (c) over 200 acre farms he will state (1) the total number of hired workers, living in and living out, entering into hired labour expenses in each size group, (2) the number of farms in each size group, (3) the average number of man-weeks work for hired labour in each size group, and (4) if piece work is appreciable, the approximate extent of piece work.

In the 1957-58 National Farm Survey, there were 158 farms included in the 50-100 acre size group, 105 farms in the 100-200 acre size group and 65 farms in the over 200 acre size group in the East and Midland region. The average hired labour per farm, expressed in man-weeks, was 21, 54 and 172 in these size groups, respectively. The basic records are not in such a form as would permit of the extraction of the data required concerning the total number of hired workers in respect of whom hired labour expenses were incurred. Examination of the individual records shows that piece work was not appreciable.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of male hired labour units on farms in the east and midland region, as revealed in the National Farm Survey, 1957-58, in the form of a reply of 23rd March, 1960.
