Vol. 180 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Theatre Society, Ltd.: Filing of Particulars.

31.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the National Theatre Society, Limited has not filed any particulars of the Company in the Companies Office since January, 1958, notwithstanding changes in the directorship and shareholding since that date; if in view of the wide public concern about the Society and the fact that £250,000 may be paid to it by the Minister for Finance for the purpose of rebuilding the Abbey Theatre he will cause a notice to be sent to it calling for the immediate filing of the requisite particulars; and if he will make a statement regarding the omission on the part of the Society.

I am aware of the failure of the National Theatre Society Ltd., to file particulars of the Company in the Companies Registration Office for any period subsequent to January, 1958. The normal requests have been made to the Society, in common with other Companies, for the submission of these particulars, and they have been informed that unless they supply them without further delay I will institute proceedings against the Society.

Mr. Ryan

Will the Minister say when notice was sent to the National Theatre Society requesting them to file these particulars?

That is a separate question. I cannot give the information offhand, but it was some time ago.

Is it not a fact that that is merely one of many companies which have received such notice?

One of hundreds.

Mr. Ryan

In view of the fact that the National Theatre Society is causing considerable public uneasiness, and that it came to this House looking for and got a quarter of a million pounds belonging to the Irish people, would the Minister not consider that special measures should be taken against this Company?

I am not aware of the public uneasiness but this Company is being treated in the same way as any other company.

Mr. Ryan

But it got a quarter of a million pounds. Other companies did not. That is the difference.

Is the Minister aware that this Company has failed to do more than furnish these returns? It has failed to tour the country in spite of the fact that it has been in receipt of a Government's subsidy.

That is not relevant.
