Vol. 181 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exports of Asiatic Cloth Goods.

23.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce why he has directed Irish exporters of goods made up from Asiatic cloths to restrict their exports to a value equivalent to that of last year, notwithstanding that materials have risen by twenty per cent and labour costs by ten per cent and that other exporters to the British market are not so restricted.

It will be recalled that the control referred to by the Deputy was instituted at the request of the British Government to prevent the exploitation by manufacturers in this country of the situation in which they had free access to certain cloths denied to British manufacturers. It was agreed to limit the value of exports to approximately the level reached before the control was instituted.

No representations were made to me for an increase in the export level for the current year on the grounds cited by the Deputy.
