Vol. 181 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Galway Villages.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have any proposals for the rearrangement of the villages of Derryglassaun East and West Menlough, Ballinasloe, County Galway, in view of the dire congestion in these villages and the fact that some tenants are willing to migrate if offered suitable holdings elsewhere, and also the fact that there are derelict holdings in the villages which could be acquired by the Land Commission.

Formulation of rearrangement proposals for the congested townland of Derryglassaun depends largely on the extent to which untenanted land can be obtained in the locality. The Land Commission have been endeavouring for some time past to secure a working pool of land for re-settlement purposes in Derryglassaun and, to this end, have recently initiated proceedings for acquisition of some lands in the townland. Further proceedings will be instituted, as circumstances permit; and the possibility of securing additional land, by the migration of suitable landholders, will also be fully considered.
