Vol. 181 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Wages Grade Pensioners.

9.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether it is intended that wages grade pensioners of Córas Iompair Éireann will be entitled to receive increased pensions under the terms of the Social Welfare (Amendment) Bill, 1960.

The Deputy will appreciate that until the Social Welfare (Amendment) Bill, 1960, becomes law and the necessary regulations are made thereunder, it is not possible to say whether any person or class of persons will be entitled to old age (contributory) pension.

The Bill proposes that such pensions will be payable to persons who have attained age 70 and who satisfy the relevant contribution conditions set out in the Bill.

The Bill also contains provision for the making of regulations prescribing the manner in which and the extent to which contributions already paid under the Social Welfare Acts or under the former National Health Insurance Acts shall reckon towards satisfying the contribution conditions for pension. These regulations may also modify the contribution conditions in the case of persons who were insured prior to 1953.

Contributions which have been paid in respect of persons employed in the wages grades of Córas Iompair Éireann will, therefore, count towards satisfying the contribution conditions for old age (contributory) pension.
