Vol. 181 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service: Age Deductions for Ex-Members of Defence Forces.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance whether an applicant for a vacancy in the Civil Service who was a member of the Defence Forces during the last war may deduct up to six years from his age; and whether this concession is available to persons who were members of the merchant fleet during that period.

There is now no special scheme of concessions in respect of employment in the Civil Service for persons who served in the Defence Forces during the Emergency. The Deputy may have in mind a special scheme of concessions which was introduced in 1945 as part of a resettlement programme for persons who served during the Emergency in the Defence Forces and Auxiliary Defence Organisations. That scheme expired on 31st March, 1956, subject to certain transitory arrangements which operated for a further year. Service with the merchant fleet did not reckon for the purpose of that scheme.
