Vol. 181 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inspection of Powerscourt Estate.

30.

asked the Minister for Lands the date on which the Land Commission inspectors inspected the Powerscourt Estate prior to arriving at their decision that the Estate was unsuitable for acquisition by the Commission for land division or for afforestation purposes.

The lands were inspected by inspectors of the Land Commission and the Forestry Division on the 12th and 13th April, 1960.

The implication that the decision to acquire land rests with inspectors is not correct.

Could the Minister say whether, in the opinion of the inspectors, the land was not suitable for afforestation purposes?

It is the opinion of the Land Commission that the lands are not suitable for afforestation purposes.

I did not ask the Minister that question. Could the Minister answer the question I have asked him?

I cannot answer what the inspectors reported to the Land Commission.

It is the policy to let it go.

It is suitable for afforestation, is it not?

The expert is talking.
