Vol. 181 No. 11

Written Answers. - Limerick Robberies.

48.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the unprecedented number of robberies in Limerick City recently, and if lie will make a statement on the matter; what is the number of Gardaí stationed at present in Limerick and in 1953 and 1957; and if he will ensure that steps are taken to alleviate the anxiety of the public, particularly those in suburban areas.

Since there has been no robbery in Limerick for at least six months I assume that the Question refers to burglaries and housebreakings.

The relevant statistics do not give any grounds for the suggestion that there has been an increase in this type of crime in Limerick. On the contrary, there has been a decrease. In the seven months from 30th September last to 30th April of this year the number of burglaries and housebreakings in Limerick was 67, as compared with 85 in the corresponding period in 1958/59.

I am informed, however, that about two months ago there were five burglaries or housebreakings in suburban areas in Limerick within the space of a couple of weeks, that they appear to be the work of the same culprit or culprits, and that no detection has yet been made. Those crimes are, however, still being actively investigated.

The detection rate for crimes of this kind in Limerick is over 60%, and I am assured by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that the number of Gardaí stationed in the city is adequate. The total Garda strength at the times mentioned in the Question has been as follows:—
