Vol. 182 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Bray Road.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the dangerous condition of the Dublin-Bray road and of its unsuitability for the volume of traffic which it is required to carry; whether he has any comparative figures for the numbers of accidents on the single track and double track sections of this road; whether the Dublin County Council have made any application for a grant from the Road Fund for the purpose of improving the road; and, if not, whether he is prepared to make such a grant if an application is received.

I am aware of the high accident record of this road and that the road is not suitable for the traffic using it.

I understand that accident statistics assembled by the Dublin County Council in respect of the road for the period 1945-1953 indicated that the accident rate per mile for the single carriageway sections was three times as high as that for the dual carriageway sections.

Responsibility for the initiation of proposals for the improvement of the different sections of the road rests with three local authorities—Dublin Corporation, Dublin County Council and Dún Laoghaire Corporation. The Dún Laoghaire Corporation have in hands a scheme for the improvement of their section and the Dublin Corporation are considering a scheme for their section. The costs in each case will be met by grants from the Road Fund. The Dublin County Council are aware that a grant is also available for an approved scheme on their section of the road.
