Vol. 182 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tenant Purchase Schemes.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will encourage local authorities to introduce optional tenant purchase schemes in respect of local authority houses at present let at a weekly rent.

County councils are obliged by law to prepare purchase schemes in respect of labourers' cottages. The powers of urban housing authorities to sell houses to their tenants have been brought to their notice by circular letters issued in 1953, 1956 and 1958. Apart from the issue of general circular letters, I am disposed to encourage any housing authority in this matter whenever an opportunity offers. In all cases purchase by a tenant is optional.

Will the Minister say on what basis these tenant purchase schemes will be arranged? Must they include the value of the interest subsidy?

It would take rather long to answer that by way of supplementary question. If the Deputy would put down a question on the specific case, I shall deal with it, because it differs from case to case.

I shall put down another question.
