Vol. 182 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disemployment of Mayo Forestry Worker.

13.

asked the Minister for Lands why the former owner of the Nephin More Forest, County Mayo, was disemployed; and whether his Department refuse work to those who sell land for forestry establishment and development.

I assume that the Deputy's question relates to Doonbredia property of Nephin More Forest. Shortage of work at the property made a staff reduction unavoidable and three men, including a son of the former owner, had to be laid off.

The answer to the second part of the Deputy's question is in the negative.

My question relates to the forest of Nephin More and to the original owner. His employment was terminated and eight other men were kept on. It is hardly an encouragement to men to give up land for forestry when their own employment is the first to be terminated.

There is no suggestion that the employment of the original owner would be the first to be terminated.

Can the Minister say why he was disemployed?

Because there is a shortage of work at the moments.
