Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Receipts from Bus Road Services.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he can assign any reason for the reduction in the first four months of 1960 as compared to last year in the gross receipts from omnibus road services; and what was the percentage increase in fares in the same period.

The information published by the Central Statistics Office indicates that there was an increase in gross receipts from all omnibus road services of approximately £166,000 in the first four months of 1960 as compared with the same period of 1959. Of this increase I understand that £158,000 relates to services operated by C.I.E. The number of passengers carried both on city and provincial bus services increased.

C.I.E. estimate that the average percentage increase in the company's passenger fares, as from 18th January, 1960, in Dublin and other major cities and as from 1st February, 1960, in provincial areas, was approximately 7½ per cent. The gross receipts were increased by a slightly greater percentage.
